Mendl’s, a well-known bakery in Zubrowka, is widely present in the narrative. Its pastries are also used as a means to advance the plot: the signature “Courtesan au Chocolat” is the tool used to hide escape tools like small files and screwdrivers, helping Gustave and Zero Moustafa escape from prison. This event enables the two characters to accomplish their mission of recovering the stolen painting. This makes Mendl’s pastries not only aesthetically delightful but also functional, turning them into a key element in the escape. Mendl's pastry also serves as the connection between Zero and Agatha.
The visual identity reflecting the pink and bright aesthetic of the Zubrowka world is what gives uniqueness and importance to the prop, whose effectiveness is determined by the embodiment of the period, the characters, and the story being portrayed
